Chinese woman wakes from coma to accuse ‘loving boyfriend’ of bashing her over burnt bread

Young man once portrayed as a hero after pledging to look after woman for life now being investigated for serious assault

A heart-warming story of a loving boyfriend in northern China who cared for his girlfriend for almost half a year after a serious accident, took a sinister turn after she awoke from her coma to accuse him of causing the injury that nearly killed her, Chinese media reported.

Once portrayed by local media as the selfless partner of his injured girlfriend, Liu Fenghe from Dalian, Liaoning province, reportedly spent about 200,000 yuan (HK$240,000) on medical treatment for his girlfriend Lin Yingying, who suffered from a severe head injury in September 2014.

Following the accident, Liu, then 24, pledged to take care of Lin, then 20, for the rest of his life, Liaoshen Evening News reported.

Lin’s family had quarrelled with Liu who had objected to them visiting their daughter in hospital.

But the family took the woman home in February last year where she remained in a vegetative state until she regained consciousness in May.

She eventually revealed the truth of her injury to her family: that she was badly beaten by Liu because she had accidentally burnt some bread in the bakery business they ran together.

Lin also revealed that the incident was not the first time she had been abused by Liu, and that he had threatened her about revealing the truth.

On Saturday, Lin’s father told the media that he had reported the matter to police.
