A young woman from eastern China who was doused in lighter fuel and set on fire five years ago by the spurned son of a government official has yet to receive any damages or compensation over the attack, according to a newspaper report.

Zhou Yan, 21, who comes from Hefei in Anhui province, was at the centre of the case that shocked Chinese society in 2011 when fuel was thrown over her by her classmate Tao Rukun.

About 30 per cent of her body was severely burned, including her face, neck and chest. One of her ears was burned off.

Zhou received nine free operations at a plastic surgery hospital until the final procedure was carried out in July 2014 after her case no longer received media attention, The Beijing News reported.

Five years after her disfigurement she has yet to receive any compensation, the newspaper said.

A court ruled that Tao’s parents should compensate Zhou with 1.72 million yuan (HK$2 million), but both sides were not happy with the ruling.

Tao’s family appealed because they thought Zhou no longer needed more treatment.

Zhou said the amount was insufficient to cover the expense of follow-up treatment. A final ruling has yet to be given.
