A terminally ill Chinese woman has married her long-time boyfriend in her hospital bed after receiving a surprise wedding proposal earlier the same day, mainland media reports.

Yang Liu, 39, finally tied the knot with her boyfriend, Peng Xin, on Wednesday at the hospital in Hubei province where she is receiving treatment, after an eight-year courtship, Hubei Radio and Television reported on Thursday.

“I have imagined my wedding on many occasions,” said Yang, a supermarket cashier from Wuhan, who has been told she has less than five years left to live. “I never thought that it would take place in a hospital, but I am just as happy.”

Yang was diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer in February, when it was already impossible for her to have life-saving surgery carried out.

The couple’s parents have never approved of their relationship, the report said.
