A 12-year-old girl was slashed on the neck on Thursday night in the second brutal attack against children in Taiwan in the past week, local media reported.
A police investigation showed the alleged attacker was the mother’s ex-boyfriend, surnamed Huang. He attacked the girl at their flat in the island’s southern city of Tainan and later escaped, according to Central Daily News.

The victim suffered a cut 6cm long and half a centimetre deep. She was sent to a hospital and was in stable condition, the newspaper quoted staff as saying.
Huang allegedly got a locksmith to open the door of the flat while the mother was out for dinner with the girl and her other daughter.
When the mother, identified by her surname Su, returned, she suspected someone had broken into the flat and went downstairs with the younger daughter to get the police.

The elder daughter remained in the flat and was attacked, the newspaper reported citing the police.
Su’s neighbours arrived and found the injured girl in the kitchen, but the attacker was nowhere to be found, according to another report by Apple Daily.

“That uncle has come,” the girl was quoted as telling her mother when she returned.
The mother told the police that she and Huang broke up a year ago and since then he had tried several times to get back together. She did not suspect he would break into the flat.

The attack came after the island was rocked by a beheading of a four-year-old girl by a “mentally unstable” man near a Metro station in Taipei on Monday.
Overall Taiwan is generally getting safer, with the number of criminal incidents per 100,000 people falling to 1,139 in 2014 from the 2,295 recorded in 2005.
