Naked outrage: Chinese woman under fire on social media after posing for nude photographs at sacred Tibetan lake

A Chinese woman has been criticised on social media after she posed for nude photographs at one of Tibet’s sacred lakes, mainland media reports.

Some internet users said the woman had disrespected the Tibetan culture and broken religious taboos by going bare beside the 72km-long Yamdrok Lake, local news website Tibet.cn reported on Wednesday.

Some of the pictures show her posing totally naked, with her face turned away from the camera.

In other pictures, she can be seen wearing a red dress while floating in the lake, or sitting and standing on the shore.

Her message attracted more than 200 comments.

In contrast to some of the critical comments, some internet users said the woman’s photographs were beautiful and supported her decision to stage the photo shoot next to the sacred lake.

Yamdrok Lake, one of Tibet’s three sacred lakes, is located less than 100km from the capital, Lhasa.

Revered by locals, it is the site of the only Tibetan monastery headed by a female abbott. The beautiful landscape next to the lake is popular with tourists and has special cultural significance for Tibetans.

Senior Buddhist monks visit Yamdrok Lake to chant mantras and pray following the death of an important “living buddha” – the Chinese term for reincarnated lamas known as tulku in Tibetan.

In 2012, a public outcry halted a tourism project that planned to let cruise ships travel on the lake.
