China’s first modern dictionary, the Xinhua Dictionary has just set two Guinness World Records – after becoming both the world’s most popular dictionary and the best-selling book, mainland media reports.

The dictionary, published by China’s influential publishing house, The Commercial Press, had sold more than 567 million copies around the world up to July 28 last year, Xinhua reported.
The Guinness World Records announced the two records in London on Tuesday.
The book was the first modern dictionary to be published in China.

The first edition was published by the People’s Education Press in 1953; The Commercial Press started to published regular updated versions of the dictionary from 1957.
Marco Frigatti, senior vice-president of Guinness World Records, said a team had completed extensive data investigation, collection and examination to verify the two records over the past year.
The dictionary was important reading for people who wanted to learn the Chinese language around the world, he said.

Tan Yue, president of China Publishing Group, which runs The Commercial Press, said the two records achieved by the dictionary showed the increasing international influence of the Chinese language and also people’s interest in the language around the world.
Dubbed the “National Dictionary”, the book had been used as a study tool in China for several generations in China, Xinhua reported.
