A chef and his assistant have been fired from a university in southern China after a student found a dead rat in a dinner she bought at the canteen on Saturday afternoon, a mainland news website reports.

The student of Hengyang Normal University in Hunan province discovered that the black, hairy object buried among a serving wood ear fungus was a dead rat, Shanghai-based Thepaper.cn reported on Monday.

She initially thought the mystery object was a piece of pig’s trotter, according to a message she posted on Wechat, a popular mainland social media platform.

The university wasted no time listing the steps it would take in response to the incident, including stepping up rodent trapping patrols in and around the canteen from once to three times a month. Photo: Thepaper.cn

Her description of the finding, accompanied with two photos, was soon reposted on other websites and became viral online.

The university launched an immediate investigation and decided the incident was the fault of the chef who cooked the meal and an assistant who served it, but did not say how the dead rat ended up in the food.
