Police are investigating after photographs circulated on social media of a protected whale shark being caught and killed in southern China, according to a news agency report.
The pictures show the baby shark swimming near an oil rig off the coast of Beihai in the Guangxi region and later being lifted out of the water, the China News Service reported.
The photographs went viral online and sparked public anger.

One online post said: “Beautiful creature. It was a mistake for you to come to China.”
Whale sharks are listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature list of threatened species.

They have also intensified checks of local wet markets and cold storage warehouses, according to the article.
