Chinese nurse clambers out of hospital window to stop patient jumping to his death

Man wanted to take his own life because he feared he would not recover from lung disease, according to newspaper report

A nurse climbed out of a window and onto a narrow ledge to stop a patient killing himself by jumping from the second floor of a hospital building in western China, a newspaper reported.

The incident happened at a hospital in Chengdu in Sichuan province on Tuesday morning, the Chengdu Business Daily reported.

The patient, an elderly man, was receiving treatment for serious lung diseases and decided to kill himself because he thought he would not recover, the report said.

A security officer passing his room spotted him climbing out of the window and tried to pull him back in.

The nurse, 26, then rushed into the room, climbed out of the window and perched on a ledge while she held the man’s arm.

With the help of others, they finally pulled the man back into the room.

The nurse was quoted as saying she was worried the patient would fall and had no time to consider her own safety.
