650,000 yuan lost in telecoms scams at single university in China

Students at Jinan University warned over using free Wi-fi connections, which hackers use to steal banking passwords

Students and teachers at Jinan University in Guangzhou province have lost 650,000 yuan (HK$770,000) to phone scams, a mainland newspaper reported on Friday.

The victims included 21 students, two teachers and three other staff, according to the Information Times. The money was taken in 26 cases of fraud in the first four months of the year, the report said, adding that most of the victims were women.

Mainland police have intensified their efforts against such scams in recent months.

On Wednesday, Beijing police returned more than 5.8 million yuan to 15 fraud victims, the Ministry of Public Security said.

They were among the first batch of several hundred victims who are expected to be repaid up to 100 million yuan in total.

Beijing police and financial institutions last year set up a centre to monitor suspicious money transfers and freeze bank accounts used by fraudsters.
