Drunk driver escapes unscathed after car careens out of control at 180km/h, but one passenger dies, two others seriously hurt

Chinese police have released shocking footage of a high-speed car crash in which a drunk driver smashed his BMW into guard rails, killing one person and seriously injuring two others.

The fatal crash took place in Jinan, eastern Shandong province, early on Sunday morning, Chinanews.com reported.

The white BMW M6 was travelling at 180km/h when it careened out of control and crashed twice into guard rails, and then brushed past a cable bus.

The driver, identified only by his surname Wang, escaped unscathed, protected by his vehicle’s airbag, the news portal reported.

But a 26-year-old woman passenger on the car died after she was rushed to hospital.

Two other passengers were critically injured. They remained under treatment in hospital, according to the report.

Wang was found with a blood alcohol content of 0.106 – meaning that he had 106 milligrams of alcohol in 100ml of his blood.

Under Chinese criminal law, a person is considered to be driving drunk if his blood alcohol content exceeds 0.02.

Wang, accused of drink driving, faces up to three years’ jail.

Surveillance footage released by police on Wednesday showed how the accident played out

The BMW, travelling at high speed, overtook a taxi and jumped a red light at a crossroad before crashing into guardrails and barely avoiding collision with a cable bus.

The vehicle, which did not have a number plate, crashed into the guardrails a second time before it finally came to a halt.

A local traffic police officer said investigations showed the car was travelling at 180km/h. The speed limit was 50km/h.

Wang told police that he had met with his three passengers only that night, at the hotel where the trio worked.

The group got together and drank for many hours before Wang offered to drive them home.

Wang had bought the second-hand smuggled BMW M6 for 160,000 yuan (HK$189,000) only this month.

Police said he bought the car after he received several millions of yuan as compensation for a land acquisition deal.
