Old buses get new life as attractive, affordable ‘love hotels’

Dozens of old, disused buses in northern China have been converted into affordable “love hotels” targeting young people looking for a good time away from home over the weekends.

A tourist hotspot in Taiyuan, Shanxi province, has spent more than 100,000 yuan (HK$118,000) refurbishing the buses, transforming them into colourful caravans for rent, China News Service reported on Monday.

The daily rental spaces are decked out in different themes, featuring Japanese cartoon characters such as Hello Kitty and Doraemon, and are targeted at young customers, according to the report.

The refurbished buses also come well equipped, with a television set, air-conditioner, cooker, kitchenware and an attached bathroom.

Accommodation costs start from 200 yuan a day, the report said.

About a dozen more old buses are now being refurbished to meet growing demand, the report added.
