Crash, bang unscrew: Chinese motorist caught on film replacing car number plates one minute after road accident

A video of a Chinese motorist replacing the number plates on her car with new ones within one minute of having an accident so she could escape a traffic penalty has gone viral on the internet, mainland media reports.

The woman was filmed by a passer-by as she unscrewed the original blue car number plate on the front of her white Honda car right after driving into the back of a BYD car on Wednesday afternoon in the city of Bingzhou , in northeastern Shandong province, the Yantai Daily newspaper reported on Thursday.

She was caught on camera crouching down in front of her car as traffic police were still chasing after the BYD car, which fled the scene right after the accident.

She then replaced the number plate on the back of the car in the same way.

Many onlookers were stunned by the woman’s behaviour and also at how quickly she changed the two plates without using any tools, the report said.

The video was uploaded and then widely circulated on mainland China’s social media, with many internet users suggesting that her car might have been purchased on the underground market.

In China, owners of vehicles that have been smuggled in from abroad or have been stolen and then sold on the black market always use fake number plates to avoid being discovered and confiscated by police.

Under Chinese law, offenders charged with using fake car number plates could have 12 traffic-violation points deducted from the driving licences and a fine of hundreds of yuan.

The report did not say whether police the police were investigating the matter.
