That sinking feeling: Chinese van driver’s lunchtime nap turns into nightmare as vehicle submerged by river floodwaters

A minivan driver in western China who took a nap in his vehicle awoke from his sleep a few hours later to find himself in the middle of a nightmare – with his vehicle submerging beneath river floodwaters, mainland media reports.

The driver, identified by his surname Tan, had decided to have a short sleep during his lunch break on Sunday beside Jialing River in city of Chongqing, the Chongqing Times reported.

When he woke up he was shocked to find river levels had risen and were now filling up his cab, with his trousers and the vehicle’s seat cushions already socked, the report said.

He quickly called police for help, who arrived to rescue him when the level of the floodwaters had reached his waist.
