Qifu, the first panda born after the devastating Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008, gave birth to twins, one male and one female, on Thursday at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.
The firstborn was male and weighed 175 grams, and his younger sister weighed 72 grams, the China News Service reported. Both were reported to be healthy.

It was Qifu’s second pregnancy and the pair were the seventh set of twins born at the base this year.
More panda babies are expected in the near future as it’s the animal’s peak birth season, experts from the base said.

The male was named Fushun, meaning “a smooth life”, and the female Fulai, meaning “luck has arrived”. Their mother was born in July 2008 after the devastating magnitude-8 earthquake in May 2008 that killed more than 80,000 people. Her name Qifu means “praying for luck”.

She earlier gave birth to twins also, both female, in 2014.
