Chinese boy missing after trying to rescue his dog from ‘whirlpool’ in the Yangtze River

Teenager swept away by strong currents in stretch of river in Sichuan province, newspaper reports

A 17-year-old boy is missing in southwest China after he tried to rescue his dog which had fallen into a whirlpool in the Yangtze River, according to a newspaper report.

The accident happened on a stretch of the river near Yibin in Sichuan province on Saturday, the Chengdu Business Daily reported.

The boy, Gu Xiaobo, was throwing stones into the water when his golden retriever was sucked into the whirlpool, according to the article.

The boy jumped in the water to rescue the dog, but also got caught up in the strong currents.

A sailor then jumped in to try to save the boy, but was hindered by the dog pushing them deeper into the water, the report said.
