Five killed in seaplane crash in Shanghai

Aircraft hit road bridge shortly after take-off

Five people were killed after a seaplane crashed into a road bridge in the Jinshan district of Shanghai on Wednesday.

The nine-seater Cessna 208B aircraft was carrying eight passengers and two crew, media reports said.

The plane was owned by Joy General Aviation based in Zhoushan in Zhejiang province and it was promoting a new shuttle and tour service between the city and the Jinshan city beach.

The plane crashed into the No. 7835 Bridge along the Shanghai to Hangzhou Expressway 10 minutes after it took off from the beach at about noon, local media reported.

All the people on board were freed from the wreckage of the aircraft, but five were declared dead in hospital, the news website Xinmin.cn quoted sources at the hospital as saying.

One survivor is undergoing surgery and the other four are in a stable condition, the publicity office of the Jinshan district announced on its social media account.
