Tons of fish have died in a heatwave in China’s Sichuan province as fishponds turned into hot pools under the sweltering sun. About 15 tons of fish in an aquatic farm in the city of Dazhou died, causing a loss of at least 200,000 yuan (HK$ 232, 500) to the owner, the Sichuan Daily reported. The owner said he had kept fish for about 30 years but he had never experienced anything like this before. Heatwaves affect man and beast around China “The temperature is too high and the water is scalding, so even a person can’t bear standing in the fishpond water for an hour,” he said. Efforts were made to save the fish, by moving them out of the pond and lowering the water temperature by replacing warm water with cooler, but they were in vain. An “orange” alert for high temperatures was issued by the local government on Monday to remind residents to stay indoors.
