Northern China in Typhoon Lionrock’s path, authorities on alert for flooding

Typhoon Lionrock is forecast to bring strong winds and heavy rain to China’s northeast over the next few days, the meteorological authority said on Sunday.

The eye of the typhoon was located in the northwestern Pacific Ocean at 5am on Sunday and was expected to make landfall in Japan tomorrow afternoon, according to a statement from the National Meteorological Centre.

Lionrock was likely to hit northeastern China on Wednesday and then weaken to an extratropical cyclone, Xinhua said.

The Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea and East China Sea were to be hit by gales from yesterday until Wednesday. The country’s northeastern regions, including Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning and Inner Mongolia will see downpours, with 200mm of rain forecast in some areas.

The meteorological centre urged local governments to stay on high alert for possible flooding and other disasters, while preparing relief supplies.
