Wealthy Chinese women caught after ‘shoplifting contests’ to see who can steal the biggest swag
A group of five women and a girl from rich families have been caught by the police in central China after holding shoplifting competitions for the thrill.
Last Friday, police netted the six shoplifters – the eldest aged 49 and the youngest only 15 – in Yingcheng, Hubei province, where they allegedly stole cosmetic products worth more than 20,000 yuan (HK$23,000) this year, the Chutian Metropolis Daily reported.
The leader of the group, identified only by her last name Sun, once ran a mahjong parlour where she met and played cards with the other five.
Even after the parlour closed, they kept in touch and started planning to shoplift in February, the report said.
All six women came from affluent families, and the purpose of their shoplifting was to seek thrill and compete to see who could steal the most loot, according to the report.
The group targeted the same two cosmetics shops three times in June and July.
Security footage showed that the females kept walking around to divert the attention of shopkeepers while stealing products.
The report said the five older women had been detained by police, while the parents of the youngest shoplifter were instructed to strictly discipline her.
