A neighbourhood in eastern China has given out 5 million yuan (HK$5.8 million) as a cash dividend to its villagers ahead of Mid-Autumn Festival, the Qingdao City Journal reports.

The cash was mainly raised from township enterprises that boosted the local economy in a village in Qingdao, Shandong province, as well as rental income from shops allocated to the community because of land acquisitions and resettlements in recent years.

The director of the neighbourhood, which has around 2,000 residents, said it had been paying dividends ranging from 3 to 5 million yuan to villagers at Spring and Mid-Autumn festivals for 20 years.

“The red of the renminbi notes looks joyous and we hope it will bring the people here good luck,” the director said.
