A couple in northern China held their wedding inside a highway tunnel on Wednesday morning after being stuck in a traffic jam for an hour, mainland media reports.

The couple were driving from the bride’s hometown to a wedding venue in Ankang, Shaanxi province, when an accident blocked the highway completely, Huashang Daily reported.

After waiting with about 100 other vehicles for more than an hour, the couple decided to begin the ceremony in the tunnel at 11:30am, as local custom dictates that weddings should be held before noon.

A wedding host asked the bride and groom whether they took each other as partners for life.

They each answered “I do” in front of about 50 relatives and drivers and passengers from other vehicles.
