Chinese fraud suspects ‘use contact lenses to spot poker player’s marked cards and dupe him out of 70,000 yuan’

Four suspected fraudsters were detained in southwestern China after one of them allegedly wore special contact lenses to identify marked cards held by a rival poker player and dupe him out of 70,000 yuan (HK$81,000), mainland media reports.

The victim, identified only by his surname Feng, lost 10,000 yuan in cash and an additional 60,000 yuan he had promised in a written IOU during a series of poker hands played in a hotel room in Dali, Yunnan province, the news portal Yunnan.cn reported.

When the five were gambling last month, one suspect wore the contact lenses that could recognise the backs of the marked cards and reveal what hand Feng was holding.

The suspect then reportedly used gestures to tip off his teammates, so they knew what cards to play.

The lenses helped the four to win every hand of poker they played with the victim, the report said.

The victim complained to police on September 23, claiming he had been drugged by the suspects before playing poker.

Police found the four suspects sleeping in the hotel room and seized more than 30 decks of marked cards plus a set of the contact lenses, according to the report.

The suspects reportedly told police they had tricked the victim into travelling to Dali by telling him they would find him clients for his pesticide business.

Then they invited Feng to gamble with them at their hotel.
