Thief takes car in eastern China ... then returns it in morning with full tank

Man admits he took Land Rover to impress girls one evening in Hangzhou bars

A 19-year-old man was put in detention for 10 days and fined 500 yuan (HK$570) in eastern China for stealing an expensive car at night — and then returning it the next morning with a full fuel tank, according to a newspaper report.

The man confessed to police in Hangzhou in Zhejiang province that he had driven the car to bars to pretend to be rich and impress girls, the Qianjiang Evening News reported.

The man was caught after a couple who own five cars and hire two drivers noticed their Land Rover was missing one night.

The couple reported it to the police and surveillance video later showed the young man driving it away and returning it in the morning.

Police were waiting in the parking lot and caught the man when he drove the car back, the report said.

The man said he found the key and tried it in various vehicles in the parking lot to find the right one.

Police are investigating how he came to have many keys for high-end cars, which he said he had just found.
