Firefighters and hospital staff in Shanghai cut rings off seven of an elderly woman’s fingers after they started to swell up.

The woman went to hospital to get the rings removed after she failed to dislodge them herself, the news website Thepaper.cn reported.

Hospital staff managed to shift two of the rings, but seven were still stuck.

Doctors were quoted as saying that the swelling was serious, with the potential to kill tissue due to poor blood circulation, and the rings had to be removed immediately to prevent permanent damage to her fingers.

She was then taken to firefighters who managed to cut off the remaining rings with knives and hacksaws.
