Fire engulfs expressway as truck ploughs into parked vehicle in eastern China
Witness says he heard a loud bang about 6.30am after truck carrying ‘paint-like’ materials exploded on impact
A truck carrying inflammable materials exploded on Monday morning after crashing into a stationary vehicle on an expressway in eastern China, according to mainland media.
The drivers of both vehicles managed to escape unhurt, though the force of the blast shattered some windows in nearby buildings, government news portal zjol.com.cn reported.
The stationary vehicle, also a truck, was laden with steel materials, while the one that caused the blast was carrying cardboard and buckets of “paint-like liquid”, it said.
A witness, surnamed Fang, who lives near the scene of the accident in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, was quoted as saying he heard a loud bang about 6.30am, then saw a huge fireball and went to investigate.
“The flames were shooting up into the sky,” he said. “There were four or five fire engines trying to deal with it.”
Authorities have begun an investigation into the cause of the accident, the report said.
