Chinese maid accused of stealing US$26,000 was ‘given away by her reflection’ caught on CCTV

A Chinese domestic helper was arrested by Shanghai police for allegedly stealing 180,000 yuan (US$26,700) and two bottles of expensive liquor from her employer, according to a news website report.

The employer alerted the police after he spotted the cash and bottles of Moutai were missing from his apartment in New Jiangwan Town, Thepaper.cn reported.

The man said the cash had been kept in his room for several days as he prepared to lend the money to a friend.

Suspicion fell on the woman after her reflection was filmed in a window in the apartment by a surveillance camera on the residential complex’s gate. She was not due to work that day.

The woman, whose full name was not given, had been working part-time at the apartment for several years.

She said she started planning to steal the money after she spotted it in a cupboard while cleaning last month.

She said she had moved the surveillance camera slightly to one side to ensure she would not be spotted, but had not reckoned on it filming her reflection in a window, according to the article.
