‘Drunk driving’ Chinese couple leaves 11 cars damaged while trying to flee accident scene
A Chinese couple has been arrested after their drunken antics left 11 cars damaged in southern China.
The woman, surnamed Tao, was driving at an outdoor parking area in the town of Changan in Dongguan, Guangdong province, on Saturday night when she hit another vehicle, Chinese news portal ThePaper.cn reported on Monday.
As she had hit the vehicle while performing an illegal maneouvre, Tao was afraid and wanted to flee the scene immediately, the report said.
She asked her male companion, surnamed Li, to take over the wheel to speed up their escape, but the owner of the car she hit tried to stop them from leaving.
As Li tried to drive out of the parking area, the car owner struggled with him, grabbing on tightly to his steering wheel to force him to stop the vehicle, the report said.
Li ended up losing control of the car in the struggle, speeding forward and crashing into nine other vehicles parked near them.
Photos showed the couple’s black car lodged between two other vehicles. It suffered extensive damage and its bumper had come off. Other cars nearby were also wrecked in the incident.
The couple was eventually arrested, and a breathalyser test showed they were under the influence of alcohol, the report said. It did not mention if anyone was injured in the incident.
The couple remained under detention pending further investigation, the report added.
