Chinese police wake driver up to tell him he had killed man in ‘hit-and-run’ crash the night before
Suspect told officers investigating case he thought other vehicle was empty
A man accused of driving away after crashing in to what he thought was an empty vehicle in eastern China was woken the next morning by police to tell him he had killed someone, local media reported.
The hit-and-run suspect, surnamed Huang, 41, was driving his van home in Wencheng County, Zhejiang province on Sunday night when he hit a vehicle that had parked by the side of the road, according to a report published by Wenzhou Evening News on Wednesday.
Huang reportedly told police he thought the vehicle was empty and continued driving home.
The next morning, he was woken up by a call from police, telling him he had killed the vehicle’s driver.
Police said they had traced Huang following an investigation but did not disclose further details.
The driver, surnamed Du, 53, was changing the tyres on his motor tricycle when the accident happened.
It was pitch black at the time and Du was not thought to have placed a warning sign to alert drivers to his presence.
Du died immediately following the crash.
Huang has been detained and the police investigation into the case is continuing.
