Man arrested on suspicion of smuggling methamphetamine is reported to have told officers that he thought they would be on holiday
A man arrested on suspicion of drug smuggling in northwest China reportedly told police he thought they would be taking the week off.
The man is accused of possessing 99g of methamphetamines at a train station in Baoji, Shaanxi province, Chinese Business News reported on Tuesday.
The 47-year-old suspect, originally from Sichuan, was arrested on suspicion of drug smuggling in the early hours of Tuesday morning, according to the report.
Police seized a clear plastic bag containing 99g of methamphetamines, commonly known as “ice”.
The man, surnamed Yi, is reported to have told officers: “I originally thought you would be on holiday this week, so it would be a prime time to deliver some drugs.
“I didn’t realise that you’d catch me as soon as I stepped off the train.”
According to Baoji police, the city government launched a major anti-drugs campaign ahead of the “golden week” holiday, which began with National Day on Sunday.
Baoji’s Vice Mayor He Dong was quoted as saying that although police officers deserved a long rest at this time of year, they must stay vigilant so that golden week does not become a peak time for crime.
The case is being further investigated, according to the report, and the man has yet to appear in court.
“Did he think being a police officer is only a nine to five job?” said one amused commenter on Chinese social network Weibo.
Another suggested it was not surprising the man had been caught if he did not understand what the police’s job entailed.
