Dramatic footage has emerged of a bus overturning in central China after being hit by a car, leaving one passenger injured, state broadcaster CCTV said on Monday.

Footage from several cameras shows the driver desperately trying to keep control of the vehicle after a white car, seemingly out of control, slams into it at high speed.

A number of passengers who were not wearing seat belts are thrown across the cabin, while luggage flies from the overhead storage compartments.

The incident happened about 2pm on October 1, the first day of China’s National Day holiday, as the bus was driving through Zhuzhou in Hunan province, the report said.

It was travelling about 90km/h, it said, well below the speed limit of 120km/h.

Local traffic police officer Lan Feng said the film showed the benefits of wearing a seat belt.

“A female passenger was thrown out of her seat when the accident happened, but the people wearing seat belts remained fixed in their seats,” he said.
