Electric buses with air purifiers to help tackle smog in Beijing
Ten electric buses equipped with air purifiers have been introduced to run on the main road cutting through the centre of Beijing as part of the efforts to tackle the capital’s notorious air pollution, according to a newspaper report.
The 18-metre long buses were expected to ply a route on Changan Avenue, the Legal Evening News reported. The road runs east to west in the heart of Beijing, including through Tiananmen Square.
The air purifiers on board would significantly improve the air quality in the vehicles, the newspaper said.
Beijing now has about 151,500 electric vehicles, including 1,300 electric buses.
Another 10,000 electric buses were expected to be introduced by 2020, the newspaper said.
The city government has invested heavily in building charging stations.
More than 100 will be built by the end of this year, helping to cut an estimated 290,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide vehicle emissions, according to the state-run news agency Xinhua.
China announced earlier this year that it was considering banning the sale of petrol and diesel-powered cars to help ease air pollution, although no timetable was given.
