Unexploded aircraft bomb found in southern China
Explosive device that may date back to the second Sino-Japanese war later safely detonated in a quarry, news website reports
An unexploded bomb has been safely detonated at a quarry in southern China, according to a news website report.
The aircraft bomb containing about 100kg in explosives was discovered on Saturday during building work near a factory in Huangshi in Hubei province, Thepaper.cn reported.
The area was cordoned off by police and the device taken to a quarry where it was safely detonated on Monday, according to the article.
The report did not say how old the 1.2 metre long bomb was, but explosives are regularly unearthed in China dating back to fighting against Japanese imperial forces in the 1930s and 1940s.
Dozens of unexploded shells second world war shells were found in Daye in Hubei province earlier this year.
A search of the area around the construction site in Huangshi found no other explosive devices, according to the report.
