Chinese police swoop on fake Peppa Pig toothbrush factories

Chinese police have busted a counterfeit ring making fake Peppa Pig-branded dental products in eastern China, mainland media reported on Tuesday.

Officers mounted a series of raids in Yangzhou, Jiangsu province, in the run-up to the annual November 11 Singles’ Day shopping extravaganza, shutting down a string of factories, warehouses and offices operated by dental supplies maker Youlemei, news website Thepaper.cn reported.

The police also detained a manager and seized more than 200,000 toothbrushes, 100,000 tubes of toothpaste and 20,000 shampoo bottles emblazoned with the British cartoon character.

The raids were in response to a complaint filed by Entertainment One, Peppa Pig’s copyright owner.

Youlemei began selling the Peppa Pig items last year, distributing them through major Chinese e-commerce sites.

The supplier said on November 18 that it had removed all of its Peppa Pig products from online marketplaces due to “inappropriate use of Peppa Pig in promotions”.

Police said the case was still under investigation.
