Monkey business lands Chinese macaque behind bars – for now
Forestry police in southwestern China have finally caught up with a wily intruder who evaded capture for about a fortnight.
A macaque began breaking into homes in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan province, in the middle of last month, defying residents’ attempts to catch it, China News Service reported.
Forestry police said they received about a dozen reports of a macaque intruder from November 16.
On Thursday, the monkey was spotted on a roof at a middle school during the school’s annual sports day.
Macaques are protected in China so forestry police were alerted and swooped on the animal after cornering it in a school dormitory, the report said.
It will be released back into the wild once it gets the all-clear from a veterinary officer.
Xishuangbanna is the biggest rainforest area in China.
