Wild elephant attacks bus in southwestern China
The vehicle was empty except for the driver, who was unharmed in the incident
A wild elephant attacked a bus in southwestern China on Saturday while the driver was still inside.
The tour bus, which was otherwise empty, broke down at around 6pm on a road near Xishuangbanna Wild Elephant Valley, a protected habitat in Yunnan province, China News Service reported.
Conservation officers had asked the driver, who has not been named, to abandon the bus after it stalled but he refused, the report said. He was not injured in the incident, the report said.
A video clip shows the mud-streaked elephant approaching the vehicle from the front. In the attack, the animal is seen pushing and headbutting the bus, damaging the windscreen.
Later, it makes its way to an empty pickup truck parked on the same road and begins battering it, nearly overturning it at one point.
Local forestry authorities said elephants from the reserve frequently stray on to the road, and are closely monitored to prevent such incidents from taking place.
