Chinese bathhouse closed after nearly 100 fall sick with fever

A bathhouse in northeast China has temporarily closed after nearly 100 customers developed a fever and respiratory infection, according to media reports.

Hospitals in Liaoyuan in Jilin province had a rush of patients on Friday who had gone to the Bihai Yuntian bathhouse, news website Thecover.cn reported.

Ninety-one people were treated for an upper respiratory tract infection and their symptoms included runny noses and fever, but most had recovered by Monday evening, the report said.

Health officials are investigating, but found no hygiene problems at the bathhouse, the report said.

The city authorities are to increase cleaning with disinfectant at public places and will continue to monitor any fever cases. No details were given of what caused the infections.

Spa-style bathhouses are popular in northern China especially in northeastern provinces such as Jilin.
