Chinese woman suddenly swallowed up by sinkhole while walking along pavement
Shopper was pushing her bike in Shenzhen when ground suddenly gave way beneath her
A woman in southern China had a narrow escape after falling into a sinkhole that swallowed her as she was walking along the street.
The woman had been shopping with her family in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, and was pushing her bicycle along the pavement when suddenly the road gave way, Guangzhou Daily reported.
“The hole was big and I couldn’t move because the bicycle was on top of me. Water was gushing out at the same time,” the woman recalled.
“I was very scared. There was a pipe below to support me, otherwise I don’t know how I would have ended up,” she said.
She started calling for help and her family flagged down several food delivery men and a taxi driver who were passing by.
They found an iron pole, which they lowered into the 2-metre deep hole and helped the woman to clamber out.
The woman sustained injuries on the head and hands and was covered in mud following the accident.
One of the delivery men gave her some clothing to keep her warm and she was taken to hospital for treatment.
Staff from the water authority went to the hospital to visit the woman. The authority told the newspaper the sinkhole was believed to have been caused by a burst pipe.
