Chinese man ‘confesses’ to killing teenage girl missing since Sunday

Suspect detained after surveillance camera footage appears to show him accosting youngster who was on a bicycle ride

Police in southern China are investigating the disappearance of a young girl and said they have detained a man they believe might be her killer.

Zeng Yongwei, a middle school pupil from the city of Shantou in Guangdong province, has not been seen since Sunday morning, local police said in a statement on Monday night on Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of Twitter.

The girl, who was described as a teenager, although her actual age was not given, was last seen by her family leaving home on her bicycle.

Footage from a surveillance camera later showed her apparently being accosted by a man while still on her bike, the statement said.

Police said they had apprehended the man seen in the video, whom they described as a 43-year-old migrant worker from Yunnan province. The statement said he had confessed to killing Zeng, though it provided no further details.

Despite the scant details released to the public, a person claiming to be the child’s uncle seemed convinced that she had been killed in comments made on Weibo in response to the police statement.

“She was a good girl at home and wasn’t upset by anything,” the person wrote. “My niece was very obedient. She cared about others and was very kind.”

The South China Morning Post was unable to authenticate the comments.

An investigation is ongoing, police said.
