Japanese police issue arrest warrant for Chinese actor Jiang Jinfu over abuse claims

  • Model and former girlfriend Haruka Nakaura tells Japanese media she has reported her injuries to police, alleges Jiang knocked out two of her teeth

Police in Japan have issued an arrest warrant for Chinese actor Jiang Jinfu after he admitted to beating his Japanese former girlfriend, news site Sina reported on Tuesday.

Haruka Nakaura – a model who is known in China as Zhongpu Youhua – has reported her injuries to the police, according to Japanese media. She said her injuries were so severe that hospital treatment took two weeks.

“The house was full of blood. He would hit me until he didn’t have the strength any more, then he would kick me. I thought I was going to be killed,” Nakaura said in an interview with Japanese television show Vivit on Tuesday.

“He knocked out two of my teeth, and when it was particularly bad he used a hammer.”

Jiang, 27, has not yet responded to those latest claims, and his whereabouts are unknown.

But when Nakaura first made allegations against him on Chinese social media on Monday last week, Jiang replied to her in a public confession on Weibo, saying “I should not have hit you”.

Nakaura had posted photos of bruises to her face, arms and body on her Instagram account, which has since been deleted. “I’ve recently made those who care about me worried – but I’m alive,” she wrote in the caption. “Jiang Jinfu’s disappearance is indeed related to me but I can’t say more at the request of my lawyer and the investigators.”

The next day Jiang wrote on microblogging site Weibo: “I spent the past month in regret. My impulsive behaviour has hurt you and your family, and I should not have hit you no matter the reason.”

Some social media users condemned Jiang, a former model and star of Chinese TV series Xuan-Yuan Sword: Scar of Sky, saying he was a misogynist. Others said he was “brave” for admitting to his behaviour.

Nakaura later claimed on Instagram that Jiang’s physical abuse had caused her to suffer a miscarriage.

According to Japanese media, Jiang met Nakaura in Japan, where he had been studying since April.

Domestic violence has traditionally been viewed as a private affair in China, so cases involving public figures are rarely exposed in this way. But Nakaura’s case echoes that of American citizen Kim Lee, who in 2011 posted shocking photos on social media of injuries inflicted by her millionaire Chinese husband, Li Yang. Lee was later awarded 50,000 yuan (US$7,200) in compensation by a Chinese court for having suffered domestic violence in a landmark divorce case.

After that, China passed its first domestic violence law in 2016, but it still remains a widespread and under-reported problem in Chinese society. According to government statistics, about a quarter of married Chinese women have experienced domestic abuse.
