Chinese masked tiger man arrested after making people nervous
- 20-year-old detained after locals complained his Tudigong face mask and furry jumpsuit were too scary
- Former convict subsequently linked to spate of unsolved crimes in neighbourhood
A man who dressed in a furry tiger suit and wore a mask of the benevolent Taoist deity Tudigong has been arrested in southern China after members of the public complained he was too scary for the neighbourhood, according to a local media report.
The man was spotted loitering on the streets of Diancheng, a town in Maoming, Guangdong province, and although he never threatened or abused anyone, some people considered his behaviour inappropriate and voiced their concerns to the police, Shanghai-based news portal Thepaper.cn reported on Friday.
He was subsequently arrested, although the report did not say on what charge.
Police on social media later identified the man as a 20-year-old Diancheng native, surnamed Xu. They said also that he had been charged in connection with a spate of crimes in the area, including the theft of a motorbike, an iPad and several men’s suits.
The social media post did not provide any information to support the charges, but said Xu had recently been released from prison after serving a six-month sentence for burglary.
Police said Xu was also being investigated in connection with two other burglaries in the area, the report said.
