A 33-year-old man has been detained in connection with a knife attack in east China on Thursday morning that left 11 people, some of them schoolchildren, wounded.
The incident happened just after 7am in the Jizhou district of Jian, Jiangsu province, police said in a statement posted on Weibo, China’s Twitter-like platform.
The suspect, identified as resident Guo Kaibin, was subdued by police and passers-by, it said.

The statement did not elaborate on the attack but said children and auxiliary police officers were among those hurt.
They were taken to hospital for treatment but their wounds were not life-threatening, it said.

Police did not provide a motive for the attack but quoted Guo’s family as saying he had a history of mental illness. An investigation is ongoing.
A social media user said the attack “happened on Shaoshan West Road”, where there is a primary school, but this was not confirmed by the police.

Mass stabbings happen frequently in China and attackers often target schools.
In October, 14 children were hurt when a 39-year-old woman ran amok with a knife at a kindergarten in the southwestern megacity of Chongqing.
In April, a knife-wielding man with a grudge killed nine middle-school children and wounded at least 10 others in northwest China’s Shaanxi province.
And in September, a man who said he wanted to take revenge on society killed nine people and wounded 46 injured others in Hunan province after ploughing his SUV into a crowd and stabbing bystanders.
