A Chinese policeman was dragged along the ground by a motorcycle while trying to arrest a suspected drug dealer. The plain clothes detective approached the suspect in Zigong in Sichuan province on Friday afternoon while he was starting up his motorbike and asked the man to stop. But when the policeman placed his hand on the man’s back, the suspect accelerated and dragged him along the ground for around 20 metres (65ft) before hitting a car. Although the policeman was injured in the process, the suspect, a man named Xie, was arrested by the officer’s colleagues. A video of the incident was widely circulated on the social media network Weibo, with many internet users praising the officer’s courage. Chinese prisoner got other inmates to dig a tunnel so he could come and go from jail “Hats off to the drug police!” one internet user commented under the post. “For the capture of every suspect, you are fighting with your life!” said another. A recent report into drug use in China by the Ministry of Public Security said there were 109,600 drug-related crimes last year, with 137,400 suspects detained. The report also estimated that around 0.18 per cent of the country’s 1.4 billion people were habitual drug users. This year Chinese police have been ordered to focus on catching drug manufacturers and traffickers in the run up to the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic, according to Liu Yuejin, deputy director of the National Narcotics Control Committee.
