A Colombian teacher has been sentenced to five years in prison for molesting a kindergarten pupil in eastern China, local media reported on Friday. Daniel Oswaldo Mayorga Heredia, 34, was convicted of child sexual abuse at Laoshan district people’s Court in Shandong province on Friday. He will be deported after serving his sentence. The former teacher at the RYB Kindergarten in Qingdao’s Shibei district was found by the court to have taken advantage of his position to abuse the child during the pupils’ scheduled afternoon nap in January, news portal Thepaper.cn reported. RYB Education, a US-listed major preschool chain, released a statement last week acknowledging that one of its teachers in Qingdao had been arrested over allegations of child abuse in January. The teacher was convicted after police started investigating the kindergarten in Beijing’s Chaoyang district in 2017 after parents made a number of complaints. Chinese state media recently called for tighter oversight of foreign teachers’ background and teaching credentials after a number of allegations of misconduct. Last month 16 foreign teachers and students of unknown nationality were detained in the eastern province of Jiangsu in an investigation into alleged drug offences.
