Chinese doctors’ hard lesson from coronavirus outbreak: be prepared and plan ahead
- Countries must boost training of medical staff to allow them to safely deal with infectious diseases, say doctors on the front line of the Covid-19 epidemic
- Experts share their experiences in the hope of helping their global counterparts to be prepared

Be prepared and plan ahead, Chinese doctors warned the world’s medical community on Wednesday, speaking about the hard lessons they have learned from their handling of the coronavirus outbreak that is spreading globally.
Countries must step up their training of medical staff to enable them to safely deal with infectious diseases, said four top doctors on the front line of the battle against the Covid-19 virus in Wuhan where the outbreak began in December.
The doctors shared their experiences at a news conference in the hope their global counterparts would benefit from what they had learned.
As of Wednesday, the total number of cases in China surpassed 80,000, including more than 3,000 deaths. At least 13 doctors and nurses have died and thousands of medical personnel have been infected.
For nearly a month after the outbreak erupted, many residents of Wuhan, the capital of central China’s Hubei province, were unable to get treated for the illness. The city went into lockdown mode on January 23 to curtail the spread of the virus.
