Normal subway service from Admiralty to Sheung Wan has resumed on the Island Line, after being suspended during the morning rush hour on Wednesday.

MTR Corporation made public announcements in its stations saying an obstruction near Sheung Wan station was causing the problem. A three-metre-long piece of metal reportedly came loose from a tunnel wall, and about a dozen maintenance workers arrived to deal with the matter.

Normal train service resumed at 10.20am, after being suspended at 8.10am, MTR Corp said.

Large crowds built up on station platforms along the line, and MTR Corp arranged free shuttle buses for stranded passengers.

At their longest, the queues for buses to Central and Sheung Wan filled up the elevated walkway leading to the Central Government Offices in Admiralty.

But the wait for service was short, according to people in the line.
