“Hong Kong people love seafood,” said campaign manager Gloria Chang. “We hope to educate people about sustainable seafood, and to push the industry and government for [ocean protection] legislation and policies.”
Chang said Hong Kong’s status as a first-class seaport and heavy consumer of seafood means it could influence the world, if the city decided to adopt ocean protection plans and policies.
She was speaking at a green event at China Merchant’s Wharf in Kennedy Town, where the Greenpeace vessel Esperanza is docked on a visit to the city.
The ship and its 19 crew members and captain have sailed from Korea to Taiwan to Hong Kong in the past six weeks, to raise awareness about overfishing.
Esperanza will be open to the public this weekend and next Tuesday. One of Greenpeace’s three ships, Esperanza is used for investigations, taking action against unlawful marine activities, and promotion and education, said Chang.
