A mother who starved her baby boy to death by diluting his milk formula was sentenced to six years in jail on Monday.
Deputy District Judge Pang Chung-ping said the sentence against So Suk-yee, 32, should pose a deterrent that would protect other children. Society did not tolerate crimes like this, which are against human nature, he said.
Pang said: “The deceased was as thin as a lath, and his appearance was horrible. Any ordinary people who look at the photos will surely show sympathy towards him.”
So gave birth to the baby boy on February 8 last year. He weighed 2.85 kilograms at birth but had gained only 160 grams by the time he died three months later.
The baby was taken to Princess Margaret Hospital in Kwai Chung on May 5 last year. He died 90 minutes later.
At death he weighed half what a normal baby of that age should weigh. The infant did not have a birth certificate and was not named in court.
