King's College London is launching an unprecedented global scholarship programme worth £2 million (HK$24.6 million) for law students, thanks to a massive donation from Hong Kong entrepreneur Dickson Poon.

The money comes from a £20 million donation Poon made to the college's law school this year to make it a "world leader" in transnational law. The school was renamed the Dickson Poon School of Law.

Under the scheme, 75 scholarships will be available for undergraduate law students around the world - the biggest for a law faculty in Europe. Fifteen will be reserved for residents from Hong Kong and the mainland.

Among the undergraduate scholarships, 25 cover full fees for all years of study, while the remaining 50 are worth £18,000 over three years.

There are also five doctoral scholarships worth £90,000 each over three years - the largest amount awarded to individual legal research students.

Professor Sir Lawrence Freedman, vice-principal of King's College London, said the programme aimed to attract the most talented legal scholars and students. "It marks an exciting milestone in the 180-year history of King's College London."
