Eleven suspected faction leaders of the Sun Yee On triad have been arrested with 50 henchmen in an undercover operation that ended in a series of raids conducted across the city since Saturday.

At least 40 other triad members are being hunted by police. They are on a list of more than 100 active Sun Yee On members provided by an undercover policeman who infiltrated the gang more than a year ago.

"It is the first time in a decade that so many office-bearers of a triad society have been caught in a single operation," one senior police officer said.

He said the operation had successfully stopped the triad faction from extending its influence in Wan Chai and Tuen Mun.

"Their moves led to confrontations with other factions of the Sun Yee On and other triad societies," he said.

The operation, codenamed, "Pentathlon", was continuing last night. Intelligence disclosed the gang recruited new members to extend its powers and that its illegal activities involved trafficking in illegal drugs and controlling entertainment venues, according to police.
